Intricate patterns of henna are typically applied to brides before wedding ceremonies. Application of henna on arms and legs is significant because it is a very powerful medicinal herb. Weddings are very stressful and often the stress causes headaches and fevers. Mehndi can prevent so much stress because it cools the body and keeps the nerves from becoming tense. Also, being a highly antiseptic agent, henna can protect the couple from viral diseases. Mehndi that is applied in indian weddings is not just a plain paste with water and henna powder-- but it also has eucalyptus oil, clove oil and lemon for the darkening colour. It is also known to boost the romance in the initial days of wedding. Generally, a professional mehndi artist or relative will apply henna in intricate designs, to the hands and feet of the bride and other women in the family. These intricate designs symbolise joy, beauty, spiritual awakening and offering.
