A mangalsutra (necklace) is a necklace that a groom ties around the brides neck in the main ritual of the ceremony. It's main objective is that the women should remember the sacred bond, also that others should be aware that she is married and she should be respected properly. The left part of the necklace there is a flow of energy, in the central part there is a flow of action and in the right part there is energy of knowledge. If it is not possible to make a mangalsutra with a cord of gold or silver, they make it by stringing black beads in a thread.

  • What does it really symbolise?

Each black bead is believed to have divine powers that protect the married couple from the evil eye. The necklace is much more than just fancy, but a sacred necklace of love, trust and marital happiness of a hindu couple. There is a drastic change in the style of mangalsutras, previously women wore heavy and elaborate gold necklaces, but now the trend is to wear short, sleek and single string ones with small designer diamonds. However, the black beads remain to keep away from evil and uphold of sanctity of the institution of marriage.
